Biography of Reverend Willis Camp, III, MDiv
Reverend Willis M. Camp, III was born May 3, 1982 to Charlene Cuthbertson Camp and the Late Willis M. Camp, Jr. in Morganton N.C. He was educated in the public school systems of Burke County N. C. and graduated from Freedom High School in 2001. Rev. Camp received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Religion and Philosophy from Shaw University 2009 and a Master of Divinity (MDiv) “Cum Laude” from Payne Theological Seminary in 2022. His published thesis is entitled: “Pastoring: While Handicapped: How Pastors would be able to function successfully through various impairments”, housed in the archives of Payne Theological Seminary, Wilberforce, Ohio.
Rev. Camp was reared in the Lake James Community Hwy 126 by his mother and grandmother. A village of relatives, church and community helped aide in his spiritual formation. He grew up in Shiloh AME Church participating in all youth activities (Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Angel Choir, Youth choir and usher board). He served on all levels of the YPD in the AME Church. Rev. Camp has been involved in his community and city serving on the Burke Co. Board of Human Relations as the teen representative. Also, he was a member of the Stouthearted Boys Club and Mountain View Youth Choir.
Rev. Camp was called to preach and preached his initial sermon February 27, 2000 at Shiloh AME Church, Morganton NC. From there he was licensed to preach, completed the Board of Examiners and was Ordained an Itinerant Deacon in the AME Church- Western North Carolina Conference by the Late Bishop Vinton Randolph Anderson in 2004, and an Itinerant Elder by Bishop James Levert Davis in 2022.
Currently, Rev. Camp is the Pastor of the Historic St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church of Asheville, North Carolina.
St. James AMEC is known for bringing the greater community together from all walks of life and ethnicities under one roof. It is known for its deep activism in social action, community involvement, ecumenicalism and evangelism. Rev. Camp has pastored several churches:
Rev. Camp is a 3rd degree PHA Mason (Queen of the West #70) and member of the World Evangelism-World Methodist Council- Order of the FLAME 2010 inductee. He is a preacher, teacher, social advocate, social justice pursuer, but most of all a child of God!
